Dispensing

As a rural practice, with no pharmacies within our catchment area, we dispense medication to the majority of our patients. Prescriptions are referred to as either “acute” (i.e. for the management of an acute problem), or “repeat” (i.e. used for management of a long term condition). The majority of prescriptions are issued as generics, i.e. using the chemical name of the medication, rather than the branded/commercial name.

The reason for doing so is that we can prescribe in the most cost effective manner thus being good stewards of limited NHS resources. This may result in repeat medication appearing to look different / having different looking packaging each month.

The actual medication is quality assured, in accordance with UK national guidance, and will therefore be exactly as effective as the branded alternative.

Our dispensaries at both Ancaster and Caythorpe have recently undergone a relocation and expansion – this is to enable us to provide a higher level of service for our dispensing patients.
